Permit Bonefish Tarpon

Cuba’s Wildest Fly Fishing Frontier

Zapata Peninsula

Our partners in Fly Fishing the Run have been pioneering world-class fishing adventures in some of the most remote and productive waters of the island. In 2008, they expanded their operations to the Zapata Peninsula, offering a unique liveaboard experience aboard the Georgiana and Perola. These floating lodges provide exclusive access to the untouched flats, channels, and lagoons of Zapata—an angler’s paradise. This program is designed to deliver the best of Zapata’s fisheries, blending comfort, seclusion, and exceptional fly fishing in one of Cuba’s most pristine ecosystems.

The Fishing

In Zapata, anglers can experience some of Cuba’s most untouched fisheries, where bonefish and permit cruise across vast white sand and turtle grass flats, and the mangrove-lined channels and lagoons are teeming with tarpon and snook. The ability to navigate these diverse environments aboard a dedicated liveaboard, such as the Georgiana or Perola, allows for a seamless and dynamic fishing adventure.

After a day spent stalking the flats or casting into hidden mangrove pockets, you can unwind in style on your private yacht, taking in the breathtaking sunsets over one of the world’s most pristine and protected marine ecosystems. Our partners in Cuba are among the few outfitters globally who can offer their guests the exclusive opportunity to fish in a completely private marine reserve, free from commercial fishing, nets, or competing skiffs.

Imagine having miles of untouched flats and secluded lagoons all to yourself, with the flexibility to target multiple species based on conditions and your personal preferences each day. This level of exclusivity and freedom creates an unparalleled fly fishing experience, one that is truly difficult to replicate anywhere else in the world.

When fishing in Zapata, you can expect to encounter Permit, large Bonefish, Tarpon, Snook, Barracuda, Jack Crevalle, Mutton Snapper, and more.

The natural bounty of Zapata is one of Cuba’s best-kept fly fishing secrets, offering an unspoiled and diverse fishery. The shallow flats, winding channels, and vast mangrove lagoons provide a thriving habitat for trophy fish, while the surrounding protected waters ensure a fishery free from commercial pressure. The Zapata ecosystem is also home to an incredible variety of wildlife, including flamingos, crocodiles, and sea turtles, making each day on the water an immersive experience in one of Cuba’s most untouched natural reserves.

The Zapata Fishing Program

Offering a unique blend of pristine fishing grounds and exclusive liveaboard accommodations, Zapata stands out as one of Cuba’s premier fly fishing destinations.

Since the early 2000s, this program has provided unparalleled access to Zapata’s untouched flats, winding channels, and expansive lagoons, delivering an unmatched experience for anglers. The program utilizes the Georgiana and Perola, two liveaboard yachts designed to provide both comfort and mobility in these remote waters.

The Georgiana, a 100-foot floating lodge, offers private cabins, air-conditioned interiors, a spacious lounge, and top-tier Cuban cuisine, ensuring an effortless balance between adventure and relaxation. For a more intimate experience, the Perola provides a classic yacht setting, ideal for smaller groups looking to explore Zapata’s diverse fishery in style.

Guests embark on a week-long fishing adventure, beginning with arrival in Havana, where our exclusive Welcome Party and extra day in the city set the perfect tone for the trip. The next day, we arrange a seamless transfer to your liveaboard yacht, your floating base camp for the days ahead.

Each day, anglers explore different zones of Zapata, from expansive white sand flats to hidden mangrove lagoons, targeting bonefish, permit, tarpon, and more. The itinerary remains flexible, allowing for adjustments based on weather conditions and optimal fishing opportunities.

When you combine Zapata’s untouched ecosystem with the personalized service and expertise of our partners—who bring over 30 years of experience delivering world-class fly fishing trips—you’re guaranteed an unforgettable adventure in one of Cuba’s most exclusive fisheries.

Best Season For Fly Fishing Zapata

The Zapata fishing season generally runs year-round, with prime conditions from March to July, when tarpon, permit, and bonefish are at their most active. Fall and winter months also offer excellent opportunities, with fewer anglers and a variety of species still present in the fishery.

Blue Sanctuary

Blue Sanctuary Map

One of the primary reasons for the continued unspoiled and intact ecosystems found in Cuba is a result of conservation efforts implemented by Blue Sanctuary.

For decades, Zapata has remained one of Cuba’s most protected marine reserves, ensuring the long-term health of its pristine flats, mangroves, and coral reefs. In collaboration with local conservation initiatives, the region is safeguarded as a no-take marine preserve, limiting commercial fishing and preserving its incredible biodiversity.

This forward-thinking conservation model helps advance the global understanding of healthy marine ecosystems, serving as a blueprint for sustainable fisheries worldwide. By employing former fishermen as expert guides, the program fosters sustainable livelihoods, promotes ecotourism, and inspires future generations to protect and steward this extraordinary environment.
